ARTIST STATEMENT:

Aloneland is a short film that draws its inspiration from the poem of the same name written by the Taiwanese poet Mengdie Zhou. The director, Yulai, was deeply moved by the poem and felt that it captured a particular essence of self-experience that she wanted to explore further through a visual medium.

To bring the poem to life on the screen, she incorporated dance and projection elements into the film to create a more immersive experience for the viewer. Additionally, MengDie's narration imbues the work with a powerful sense of homesickness and nostalgia.

The film conveys the director's personal understanding and perception of the poem. It captures the essence of the poem's themes, including feelings of loneliness, isolation, and disconnection from the world, and presents them with quirky aesthetics and emotionally resonant visuals.

Overall, Aloneland creates a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere inspired from poet Mengdie Zhou, as well as a dreamlike exploration of solitude.
