KRISTEN CHIU

Kristen Chiu is an Asian-American interdisciplinary artist.  She grew up in San Diego, CA from which she draws inspiration surrounding texture and natural elements.  Her work is informed by sentimentality, memory, thing theory, ritual, and natural spaces. As part of a diaspora--her mother immigrated from Taiwan--sentimentality towards objects has been integral to her practice. The ritualistic process of holding onto something tangible to connect to the intangible feels familial.

Much of Kristen's work centers around the idea that memories become intertwined with the vessels that witness them. The things we collect hold feelings and memories and have the power to evoke more than just their corporeal forms.  Kristen currently lives and works between New York and California.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
Portals to Belonging is a series that explores the dichotomy of growing up with more than one cultural tie. It pulls at the thread of what it means to belong within the hyphenated label of Asian-American. Each portal searches for a sense of home, holding up a mirror in hopes of being reflected back a space that feels inviting or familiar enough to belong to.
