ARTIST STATEMENT:
“Ecdysis”, the title of this piece, is the ugly process of shedding an older and empty skin. This hand-woven sculpture uses the process of doubleweave to create a tube-like exoskeleton effect, which suspends in space like a body would. The saturated colors in this work celebrate the body and its largest organ, embracing the sags and ripples which are linked to fragility and the process of aging. Materials used are monofilament and rayon which are used for transparency and reflection upon our tender and fleshy bodies. This work searches for beauty in the discarded and unwanted.
