ARTIST STATEMENT:

Like many people, my life was upended by the COVID-19 pandemic. Three months into quarantine, my fiancée and I were uprooted by a family member's health crisis six hours away in deep MAGA country. We went from living full lives to isolating with each other to leaving behind everything we knew to care for two senior citizens full-time, each with chronic, debilitating diseases. As the country was ravaged by a global health crisis, we saw firsthand the ways that the ongoing issues plaguing our country's healthcare system let citizens down long before COVID. With limited resources and surrounded by conspiracy theorists, gun fanatics, and all other members of the far right, our already all-consuming sense of isolation and loneliness took on a new meaning.

In these comics I attempt to confront my feelings of suffocation and adaptability with my character's literal bending to the spatial constraints of the panel borders. These pages are the most cathartic I’ve ever produced and, with lots of dreaded emotional unpacking ahead of me, the beginnings of a book I plan to write and illustrate.
