MATTHEW BURBRIDGE

ARTIST STATEMENT:

When I pitched this project I wanted to work out something that felt stuck to my ribs. I wanted to pour out bodies, faces, fingers, and I wanted them to all melt together. I wanted strain and hurt to twist together with me. I wanted it to hurt me while I did it and I wanted to share the strain of making something intense while I too was feeling that intensity.

The piece needed to be a challenge to make and complete in order to create that strain. So I pitched something big. And the result of that decision created a piece more striking than I could’ve planned for. The piece depicts hurt, confusion, and feelings of entrapment. I absolutely love it.
