ARTIST STATEMENT:

When I was a baby, my grandma advised my mom to surround me with knives in my crib so I would learn not to move around. Movement results in pain. As an adult my mom has always advised me that if I want to feel better about myself, I should fix my posture. Shoulders back, head up. By improving one's posture, you improve your state of mind. Stand Up Straight is a correctional device born from maternal advice. The metal spine acts as an extension of myself, literally and figuratively. When hunched over, it is a not-so-gentle reminder to correct my posture.
