IZZY EL NEMS
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
I am a Native New Yorker and, of course, am driven by the City’s constant kind of theater. A Lebanese woman growing up in New York’s fast-paced environment, my work encompasses the real life landscape of the daily humanity that I experience. My childhood apartment on the corner of 92nd Street and Broadway is deceiving. With projects at one end, luxury apartment buildings at the other, and SROS, elegant pre-war buildings, rent-stabilized tenements, and a fortune teller sprinkled in between, my street, more like a metropolis, is part of my city, which is a universe. My work holds this same aura of nonalignment: the colors are bold; the size is adventurous; the paint is heavy. I am a New Yorker. My work speaks New York attitude. I want New Yorkers to recognize part of themselves behind my canvas.
